AG Heinzelmann Debating Biotechnology

Ongoing research into new biotechnologies raises ethical and societal challenges. Bilateral discussion between science and society may address them. The proposed seminar uses organised debating to enact these discussions in the classroom. The lecturers will first introduce basics from the science of new biotechnologies and philosophical argument to familiarize students with the content and techniques of the debates. Second, students will practice rotating roles by analyzing and arguing about varying topics, and by assessing their own and others’ performances. Third, students will prepare, organize, and document a debate on a controversial topic in which the seminar will culminate.
